Get to know Kandice

Hi! I’m Kandace Marshall-Cunanan. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, but I’m also a behavior changer, a self-esteem booster, an emotional supporter and a calm creator. I specialize in working with children and teens who need help learning how to manage their emotions and behaviors. I also help parents learn how to communicate with their kids and help them create a more peaceful home environment.

Behavior Changer

One of the first signs that something is going on with a child or teen is often their behavior. Children who are struggling emotionally may act defiant and aggressive, or may withdraw, isolate themselves, and begin doing poorly in school. If your child is struggling, I can help them understand their emotions and change their behaviors. At the same time I will also work with you to develop tools to help your child in their future.

Self-Esteem Booster & Emotional Supporter

Growing up in an era where everything is shared on social media, bullying is rampant, and the pressures to succeed are at an all time high, it’s no surprise that good self-confidence and self-esteem are hard to maintain. I can help your child learn to feel good about themselves and learn the tools they will need to cope with their emotions, make good choices for themselves and their future and communicate their feelings with you.

How I do it

I use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including, but not limited to, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, and Person Centered Therapy to help your child identify and verbalize their feelings, change their behaviors, increase their frustration tolerance and develop better communication skills. I will also be a safe place for your child and act as an advocate, friend and mentor to help them always feel supported.

My Experience

I graduated from California State University - Channel Islands in 2007 and immediately went to graduate school at National University, graduating in 2010 with a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology.  While pursing my degree, I worked for the Conejo Valley School District in the Special Education Department.  I did my clinical training at the Valley Trauma Center where I worked with women and children who survived sexual abuse.  Additionally, I have worked at a children's counseling group serving families in their homes and at schools within the Conejo Valley, and have experience working with children on the Autism spectrum. I am certified in Trauma Focused CBT and I am in the process of receiving EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing) certification.

A little more about me

I believe that for therapy to work you have to trust and know your therapist, so in order to make that easier I think there are some things you should know about me. I have 3 wonderful kids, all in their 20's now, 2 who are still in college.  Every chance I get I love to spend time with them. I enjoy yoga because it helps me to stay grounded and I am a California girl born and raised and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.  I am a voracious reader and I love receiving recommendations for new books to read.  My family and I love going to music festivals and concerts, and it is something we do every few months.
