Get to know Patrick
Hi! I’m Patrick McCaslin. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, but you can also call me an addiction expert, anger tamer, a dad’s supporter and a mood changer. I specialize in working with adolescents and adults, who want to get control over an addiction, learn to manage their anger or have a smoother transition into marriage and fatherhood. I can help you increase your frustration tolerance, feel calmer and more in control and have more confidence in your role as a partner and father.
When most people hear the word addiction they immediately think of substances, however addiction can take many shapes and forms. While I do help people beat their substance addiction, I also help people with behavioral addictions. Research shows that behavioral addictions such as an addiction to electronics, gaming, food, exercise, or even shopping have the same effect on the brain. I can help you learn how to manage or stop these behaviors leading to greater life satisfaction, more meaningful relationships, increased communication, a greater sense of control and a sense of authenticity and calm.
Struggling with managing your anger is a sign that something isn’t working and you don’t know how to handle it any other way. It may be that you were never taught how to manage your feelings appropriately or that it’s easier to get angry than it is to be vulnerable. Regardless of the reason, I can help you express your anger in a more manageable, appropriate way. In our work together I will help you identify triggers for your anger, learn relaxation techniques to help you calm down, teach you to communicate effectively, minimize outbursts and feel more in control.
How I do it
I practice using a variety of therapeutic techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), Humanistic Psychology, and Post-Modern Therapy. Using these approaches I will help you gain clarity and acceptance on who you are, and initiate the change you desire. I will help you feel more in control of your emotions and behaviors, manage your addictions and learn how to better communicate. I will be your biggest supporter and ensure you have a safe, judgment-free space to express yourself and make change.
I earned my Master Degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University and am a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. In my training I have worked alongside individuals who have struggled with addictions, anger, trauma, anxiety, depression and life transitions. I have facilitated a variety of groups covering topics such as anger management, relationship red flags, bystander intervention, alcohol and drug awareness, and increasing self-esteem for adults and adolescents. I am a certified crisis counselor for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and have advanced training in anger management and addiction.
A little more about me
I have lived in Ventura County most of my life and decided to get into this profession due to my own life experiences. I practice not taking myself too seriously and have learned to live my life more authentically because of it. Snow skiing is one of my favorite past times and I enjoy traveling to different ski resorts in and out of the county. I am married, and my wife and I are the parents of a young boy who lights up our life.
